Simple Grilled Bratwurst

My kids now call this meal bratbest instead of bratwurst because it is one of their favorite meals. This recipe is just the cooking method for bratwurst, rather than a recipe on how to make the sausage from scratch, though I'm sure that would be way more delicious. You can use any sausage you prefer, chicken sausage, turkey sausage or the traditional bratwurst. The key to cooking it to perfection is a temperature probe that can stay inserted into one or several bratwurst. I use this thermometer which has up to four probes that can be used at once.
Most of my family eats these with a side of sauerkraut and potato chips. One or two of us eat it with a bun. Both ways are delicious!

Ingredients
10 bratwurst sausages

Directions
1. Fill a large pot halfway with water and bring to a boil. Slide a temperature probe lengthwise into a sausage so that the tip of the probe is at the middle of the sausage. Repeat for more temperature readings.
2. Place all the bratwurst into the pot and turn the heat to medium low and let simmer until the internal temperature reads 150-160°F. The lower temperature is fine because you will be bringing it up to a safe temperature of 165°F on the grill. I prefer the higher temperature because the inside of the bratwurst is less pink when serving.
3. When the temperature of the bratwurst has reached about 130°F, preheat the grill. Once the bratwurst are finished simmering, place them on the grill and turn the heat to low. Grill for about 1-2 minutes on each side or until the internal temperature is at least 165°F. Enjoy!
